Introduction

The John L. Creech Files of photographs, clippings, and publications are part of the larger U.S. National Arboretum Collection, MS 186. In 2017, Special Collections staff organized, described, and re-housed this sub-collection of materials due to frequent research use and deteriorating folder tabs. Special Collections Librarian Amy Morgan and volunteer Irene Blade re-housed seven linear feet of materials into 17 acid-free boxes. In 2019, Office Automation Assistant Raymond Williams keyed the container list into an Excel spreadsheet. In 2020, Special Collections Archivist Sara Lee compiled this supplemental finding aid.

Scope and Content Note

In the finding aid for the U.S. National Arboretum Collection written by Joe Howard in 1994, he identified the John L. Creech files as “Photographs and Illustrations [used in] Miscellaneous Publications Box 31 A-L”. Later, Special Collections staff located additional files in the library stacks representing subjects in alphabetical order starting with “M-W”. In 2017, the newly discovered Creech materials were added to the U.S. National Arboretum Collection. The boxes were placed in order following the already existing “A-L” files. Therefore, this finding aid includes documentation of Creech files that are not acknowledged in Howard’s finding aid.

The John L. Creech files contain black and white photographs of plants found in different geographic locations throughout the world. Photographs are mounted on paper with typewritten data. Details include subject name, negative number, size, recipient of print was and/or title of work containing the photograph, brief caption, expedition, or date. The majority of these photographs were taken during plant exploration trips.

Photographic files are in alphabetical order by folder name, which ranges from a person to plant, geographical location, activity related to plants, or an organization such as experiment station or garden club. Types of photographs include perennial plants, fiber plants, experiment stations, USDA employees, fertilizer, garden clubs, crop, fruit, grasses, aquatic flowering plants, trees, palm trees, shrubs, evergreen shrub, spices, quarantine, and vegetables.

Persons for which individually named files exist include Frederick V. Coville (first director of the National Arboretum), Dr. David and Graham Fairchild, Myra Haines, Peter Liu, Wilson Popenoe, Edward Simmonds, Homer C. Skeels, Walter Van Fleet, H. L. (Harvey Leroy) Westover, and W. E. (William Edwin) Whitehouse. This is not an exhaustive list of people shown in the collection photographs. Additional people appear in photographs and their names are indicated in captions.
